The Aquitaine is a French region of south-west of France. It includes five departments: Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-and-Garonne & Pyrenees-Atlantiques.

The Aquitaine is crossed by three rivers: the Garonne, the Dordogne and the Adour. It opens to the west on the Atlantic Ocean by a coast straight of 270 km long, called the "côte d'Argent » and only interrupted by the basin of Arcachon. Aquitaine comes from the latin Aquitania, derived from two roots préceltiques, meaning "close to the sea".

In occitan (dialects gascon, languedocian and limousin), Aquitaine is said Aquitània [aki'tanj report in basque Akitania and:Aguiéne, contraction between Aquitaine and Guyenne.

In occitan (dialects gascon, languedocian and limousin), under the Roman Empire, the name Aquitaine applies to a large South-west of the Gaul, from the Pyrenees to the shores of the Loire, Auvergne included. Saintes and Bordeaux were the capitals of the Gaul antique aquitaine.
The Aquitaine antique reappears in the third century under the name of nine Aquitaine peoples or Biarritz. Its romanization will lead to the Gascogne.
The Aquitaine passes under the domination of Visigoths, who arrived from Provence and of Italy in 412-413.
By 418, a treaty gives the status of federated (danube) of the Visigoths in the Roman Empire, which installs in Aquitaine.
In 507, Clovis, called by the bishops of Biarritz, integrates the kingdom of Francs, flying Alaric II, king of Visigoths, at the Battle of Vouillé.
671 Sees the independence of the Aquitaine, headed by the duke Wolf.
Between 719 and 732, the dukes Eudes, Waïfre Royalist and hold the Albigeois where they have property. Eudes combat the Saracens in Albigeois.
732 Sees the defeat of the duke of Aquitaine and the invasion of the Gascony by the emir Abd el Rahman, arrested at the Battle of Poitiers by Charles Martel, who starts the meeting of the Aquitaine to kingdom franc.
742 And 743 see the campaigns of son of Charles Martel, Carloman and Pépin the Brief, against the Aquitaine (and Bavaria).
Considering the Aquitaine too enfranchised, Pépin the Short murdered the duke Waïfre in 768.
En 778, l'armée de Roland, piégée par le wali de Saragosse, a été défaite par les Navarrais dans les montagnes de Roncevaux en revenant de Pamplenune. Puis Charlemagne crée en 781 pour son fils Louis le Débonnaire alors âgé de trois ans, le royaume d'Aquitaine englobant les territoires du Rhône à l'Atlantique. Il avait pour capitale Toulouse afin de fédérer la reconquête hispanique.
L'Aquitaine sous Charlemagne (cliquer pour agrandir)En 814, Louis le Débonnaire, devenu empereur à la mort de son père Charlemagne, cède le royaume d'Aquitaine à son fils Pépin, qui meurt en 838. Pepin II, fils de Pépin Ier, est proclamé roi après lui. Néanmoins ce fils est un fils bâtard et Louis le Pieux décide dans ses différents projets de partage de lui retirer son royaume et de le confier à son troisième fils Charles le Chauve qui se fait alors couronner roi d'Aquitaine en 848. En 855, Charles le Chauve en investit son fils Charles dit l'Enfant, mais ce dernier meurt en 867, et c'est son autre fils Louis le Bègue qui reçoit ce royaume.
